Ever watched Double Dare 2000 on TV? Well, St. John Fisher College brought their own version to campus. I participated, oh and my team won too! Thanks to the Student Activities Board or SAB students were able to watch and participate in trivia questions, a huge blow up obstacle course race, and my favorite part getting really messy with pies, shaving cream, and squirt guns to name a few of the challenges. If you have never seen this show before I would recommend looking it up, because then you can get a sense of how awesome/funny/exciting this event was for everyone. Afterwards the winning team was able to pick out from a range of gift cards that they could each take with them. SAB always has awesome prizes for their members and the people that participate in their events. Also, as an intermission to this event SAB held their BUCK auction, which is the opportunity for people to participate in an auction for more amazing prizes (Call of Duty Black Ops, Vera Bradley, movie pack, food pack, gift cards, etc.) with the coupons that they earn for each SAB event that they go to. Everyone really won both the prizes that they received and the fun that they had! This is just one of the cool, different, and fun events that not only SAB brings to campus for students but many other clubs do as well, like the Student Government Association, Res Life, and Commuter Council. There is always something to do for everyone!

It is also a great way to relieve some stress before finals. Anyway, so of course my favorite place in the world to go is the zoo, so that was how we decided to spend the day! Zoos I found out really appreciate when people visit in the winter, because that is not when they are most busy. They hurt in the winter due to the decrease in visitors. I will let you in on a big secret though, and that is that the winter is the BEST time to visit the zoo. The animals are very active, because it’s not as hot and there are not as many people tiring them out. So low and behold we had an amazing time at the Seneca Park Zoo in the older part of the zoo with the orangutans, rhinos, wolves, etc. and in the new part of the zoo (The African Safari) with the lions, fake tour bus, elephants, and baboons too. I love that St. John Fisher College is in the middle or close to so many off campus activities too, like the Seneca Park Zoo!

There isn't a whole lot going on around campus outside of the tests. Although it appears to be this way, walk into any area with a table or computer and you will find dozens of dozens of people studying for their finals. These locations can be found at several different places across campus. One of the most populated of them being our Lavery Library. We have a three-floor library. The main floor has brand new computer work stations, and plenty of space to study/work with groups. Downstairs, there are more options for group tables as well as a computer lab. On the top floor is a great spot for individual studying, with study rooms and an atmosphere we call the "quiet floor". Besides the library, most of the residence halls have computer labs/study areas to work in. There is an entire floor of Kearney Hall (an academic building) as well as lab stations throughout other buildings. The hidden gems throughout campus are also utilized by many students. So, if you have studying or work that needs to be done at Fisher, we have so many resources for you to take advantage of.

Now is the time for me to wait for the results. I am very glad that everything is over. I can finally watching movies and TV shows without worrying about the exams now. Time passed so fast. I can’t believe I am half way through my sophomore year already. The memory of the first day of college is still vivid to me.

By the way, for those who didn’t know, we had our AIM dance show last Friday night. It turned out very well. All the seats were filled. Thank you for those who came to support us, and those who emotionally support us :). Anyway, I have some big plans this week. I am planning to go down to New York City this Sunday to finish some paperwork for studying abroad, so I am very excited about that. I will also visit many of my closest friends down there while I am in New York City. Hopefully, everything will go smooth with my application for a visa and paperwork. Wish me luck. I wish all of you a merry Christmas!!! I will talk to you again in 2013!

Melody Fisher Insiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15684441826366439899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576304144258135869.post-45733497966536858352012-12-06T14:52:00.003-05:002012-12-06T14:52:21.519-05:00Since next week is finals week there have been many different programs going on around campus to get students to take a break and have fun! The other night there was a Pinterest night where you could go to make different holiday crafts. It was nice to be able to take a little break from cramming for finals and make holiday gifts for people back at home! Also, many of the Resident Assistants are having different programs each night just to help people relax and have fun before break!!!

I’ve spent hours preparing for tests, writing essays, and creating projects and presentations all for this week and next. It’s a very busy time for all students and there have been many hours spent in the library. But it’s all worth it because at the end of the semester we get to show all of the knowledge we’ve obtained and the concepts we’ve mastered. I haven’t enjoyed the hours I’ve spent on all of these assignments, but I have and will continue to enjoy the things I’m learning. Even if it doesn’t seem applicable right now that I have to know what happened during the French revolution, why it happened, or the significance of it happening; I know that very soon when I go to grad school or begin teaching I will need to know.

The college hired a company to come in and recreate their marketing program and part of that is to get new photos of all aspects of the college. I was actually able to be a part of some photo shoots last semester, too. Let me be clear, I am not a well-dressed person. I wear jeans, a t-shirt, and hoodie seven days a week. So I am amazed anyone would even ask me to be a part of something like this. That’s the joy of working for admissions as Student Ambassador for the school; you get the opportunity to do a lot of unique things to represent the school!

As usual, I have all the classes of a Tuesday, but today I get the added sense of urgency. As my peers have mentioned, this is our last week of classes. This means that everything is due, and it is due very soon. For example: due Thursday I have 2 portfolios, 1 project and a unit plan. During finals next week, I have another project due and two short finals. One of the benefits and/or burdens of being an Education major means that, for the most part, you almost never have finals. Instead, you have portfolios and projects that go throughout the entire semester and are cumulative at the end. That's the boat I'm sailing in right now. The two finals I have are for content-area courses and will be fairly brief, and I probably won't stress too much over them. However, despite the level of difficulty, it's always important to be sure you are fully prepared for any college-level exam. As per the portfolios and projects, these have required a lot of time management and steady work over the course of the semester. Without a lot of the time management skills I've learned in my three years at Fisher, these would prove to be more cumbersome, but Fisher has prepared me. I know I can get through this week; it'll take time, hard work and perseverance but thanks to the support I have here at Fisher, I know I can do it.

They had asked members of a club that I am involved in, SWAV or Students with a Vision, to gather some volunteers to go to CP Rochester and man a station that included crafts, reading, and other activities to keep the kids occupied throughout the evening. Going back to my own childhood, the theme of the night was Rainbow Fish, which added to the fun and excitement of the event for everyone including the kids and fellow volunteers. I personally worked with a student in the St. John Fisher Pharmacy School graduate program at the art station where we helped the kids color pictures of Rainbow Fish and for the older kids we helped them to make Rainbow Fish out of CDs and colorful beads. I don’t know who loved this activity more me or them! I got to meet some amazing kids that had a blast getting to know me as well. I find it very beneficial too that different parts of St. John Fisher College, including SWAV, Education majors, Pharmacy School students, Service Scholars, and First Generation students, to name the groups that I knew about rallied up together to support such a great event like this. Community service unites the campus just as much as it improves the quality of the students, faculty, and staff.

This is getting a little stressful because I feel like I have a lot of studying to do before finals. Some of my lab practicals are going to start this week. I have made a study guide for them already, and just need some more studying now. Last Saturday was the Day of Celebration. There were some great shows, and many varieties of food from different cultures. My favorite parts were the fashion show and the Indian dances - I also loved the food there. It is great that Diversity clubs are able to put this event together so that we have the opportunity to experience different things and cultures within our college.

Back to this week, although I know I am going to have lots of studying to do, I am still going to some campus activities because they sound very interesting. I want to go to the Pinterest live DIY crafting this Tuesday night because I love Pinterest. On Wednesday night, there is going to be Double Dare 2000! This is an activity that is hosted by SAB (Student Activities Board). There are going to be two teams battling through slime and chocolate pudding for $1,000 in prizes! Anyone could be the winner, so I am very excited for this.

Melody :)Fisher Insiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15684441826366439899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576304144258135869.post-50181247698050161392012-11-30T16:26:00.000-05:002012-11-30T16:26:00.406-05:00Day of CelebrationI helped to set up for the Day of Celebration today, and I was absolutely blown away by how elaborate and amazing Cleary Auditorium looked toward the end of the setup! Day of Celebration is an event held annually on campus that is all-day and it showcases holiday celebrations from different cultures, races, ethnicities, religions, and so on. Throughout the event they are having a Kwanzaa Dinner Ceremony, an Indian Fashion Show, Santa, Panama Dance Group, and of course free food to name a few things! Tables are covered in the colors of various countries, there are murals of different symbols that represent different traditions, and the atmosphere is very festive and exciting. I never knew how much work, effort, and time went into this event, but now I do since I helped with set up. SGA, the Diversity Club, and many other clubs put in a lot of effort to make this event beneficial for the campus and students during this holiday season and you for sure can tell. This will not be an event that anyone will want to miss, and it is on the weekend so people are able to take a break from studying, writing papers, and working on projects to celebrate each other really.Fisher Insiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15684441826366439899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576304144258135869.post-35647683399019873162012-11-30T16:24:00.003-05:002012-11-30T16:24:19.232-05:00Hi everyone,

It’s Friday already. Today is going be very busy for me. I have a group presentation for Microbes and Disease class and an exam for Chemistry. This doesn’t sound too fun, does it? But I think I am ready to get it done. I can’t believe that we only have one more week of classes left. I am both happy and nervous about it because I don’t do too well on final exams.

On top of studying and preparing for the finals and the lab practical, I am also getting ready for the AIM (Arts and Motion) dance performance next week on the 7th of December. The performance starts at 8pm, and it includes hip hop, Spanish, modern dances and many others. I am very excited for this and hope to see all of you guys at the performance!

Melody :)

Fisher Insiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15684441826366439899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576304144258135869.post-18429758495704054612012-11-30T16:22:00.002-05:002012-11-30T16:22:58.398-05:0011/28/12

This weekend is our annual Day of Celebration on campus. The event highlights a specific culture ever year, but is designed to celebrate every culture. The focal culture this year is India and to market the event an extremely large Elephant cardboard poster was purchased. I love animals so it was really neat to see such a unique marketing strategy. The elephant was not colored like a typical elephant. Instead the elephant was decorated with all sorts of Indian designs, making it really creative! I’m looking forward to attending the Day of Celebration this week because I know there are going to be so many new cultures that I get to learn about and most importantly for me, a lot of really great food!

We are holding a Social Justice Fair next week and today half the class had to present their project. We all have a big tri-fold poster and explained to the class about the social justice issue we looked into. It was really cool because you don’t hear about a lot of these issues commonly. Students presented on English as a second language students and why they so often struggle, the effects of depression on kids and how common it is, the level of stereotyping that some students feel in urban school districts, and all sorts of issues. We are all Education majors so most of them were focused on school issues, but it was really interesting and important to learn about these social justice issues so that we can help create a better future when we are a part of the community.

Today, I have a pretty good amount of things planned to get done, despite having only one class. It's one of my more difficult courses this semester. However, our professor did a good job today talking to us and explaining what specifically we have to get done before the end of the semester. This was very useful and I found it quite beneficial. It's the little things like this that make the faculty and staff at Fisher so wonderful. They take class time to clear questions and give explanations of assignments. So many of them go out for their way to meet with you outside of their office hours. Fisher's professors are some of the most personable people I've ever had the opportunity to meet. They truly are here to see you not only succeed, but do so at a high level.

The English club is working this event. Anyone is welcome to come to the book fair and buy books for their families or even donate books to School #19 here in Rochester. All the money made at this event will be donated to the school as well as books and supplies. If you can not make the fair you can visit the website and order books online and they will be sent to you before Christmas. This is a great event that helps raise money for a Rochester school.

One of the major things I think I'm going to take away from my experience here at Fisher is just how important the meaning of family is. It's something we take for granted growing up and sometimes never truly realize. However, at Fisher, we always feel like we are a family. It always sound cliche, but when I'm at Fisher I feel like I'm at home. This was evident this past week during break. Yes, it was wonderful to see my "literal" family, but all I kept thinking about was my Fisher Family and what they were doing for the holiday's.

This entry may sound like a soap box to some of you, but it's very true. I've built some amazing relationships while at Fisher. This is because of the amazing support system we have in place. From professors, to librarians, to dining hall workers, to RAs, and to peers; we have an amazing support group here. To that, I am very thankful to St. John Fisher College and all it's given me. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are ready for the holiday season! I'll have more to share with you tomorrow.

Here is where I can get my work done, hang out with good people, and prepare to end the semester on a positive note! Being home is always a plus, but here is my home too. There are loose odds and ends with clubs, projects, papers, and exams that tend to add up over time, but St. John Fisher is prepared to fight the stress with us. They are already getting spa days ready, planning to bring animals for us to pet and play with, and if I remember this time of year last year correctly many more events are bound to come out as well.

With the end of the semester also comes my realization that I will not be here next semester but in Ireland studying abroad. St. John Fisher College and Dr. Costello, the director of the Foreign Study program, have done a wonderful job working with us through the process and offering advice for the things we have to do on our own. Some of these things are items that I would never have ever realized or thought of until I was at the University of Limerick! She even discussed with all of the students studying abroad how to deal with homesickness and missing the United States. I appreciated this, because now I have gotten the idea for Christmas presents and the idea to write letters to the people closest to me that I know will be affected by my leaving. All of these things make the process and studying abroad in the spring even more enjoyable and exciting.

It really is amazing how quickly the semester goes by when you mix work with the fun the St. John Fisher College offers too. I feel like I blinked and I went from Freshman Orientation Weekend to writing this very blog.

As you all know from my last blog, I was debating between the choices of going to New York City or staying home. Well, I ended up staying home and had a great time. There are two main reasons for that. First, I learned from my past experiences that it would be very crowded in NYC during Thanksgiving break, and the transportation is just crazy. The second reason is that I rarely had time to spend with my family so I really wanted to stay home with them.

Due to the reason that everyone had their own plans on the Thanksgiving Day, we decided to have a get together on the day before Thanksgiving. My older sisters and my brother in law brought my little nephew and niece. That was my first time meeting my niece, who was just born couple weeks ago. My nephew, who is only 3 years old, stayed over that night. He was quite energetic, and wouldn’t stop talking about Mickey Mouse. Everybody slept on the floor that night (just for fun). By the way, we also have 3 dogs, 3 cats, and 6 puppies now. Well, as you can imagine, that wasn’t a good night sleep for me. But I still enjoyed every moment with them. And yes, I went shopping on Black Friday. It was chaos, but I still found some great deals. I came back to school on Sunday because I needed to finish some homework before Monday. Time to get back on track!

Melody :)Fisher Insiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15684441826366439899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576304144258135869.post-31596825926461048842012-11-19T15:17:00.000-05:002012-11-19T15:17:08.556-05:00Wait in line? I don’t think so.Commuter Council, one of the four big clubs on campus came to the rescue last Thursday when they offered cheap tickets to the premiere of the last of the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2! Days leading up to the premiere of course included watching all of the movies that came out prior to this finale, discussing the book version of the movie, and picking up my movie ticket! For someone that loves this series as much as I do and some of my friends it is nice to know that St. John Fisher College and Commuter Council found a way to support the college students that feel the same way. Especially with projects, papers, and exams all piling up it is nice to take advantage of opportunities like these that do not leave a hole in my pocket but do also allow for some stress relief. Getting together with friends that share common interests is what college is all about, and this time in particular allowed for me to hang out with people that I had met freshman year but hadn’t seen much since. St. John Fisher College and the clubs and organizations that are on campus support and keep students active outside of the classroom as well, so that everyone has the ability to get the full experience of college, new friends, and finding out how to connect with those people that you have common interests with. With cheap tickets already in my hand there was no waiting in line, and my friends and I got some of the best seats in the house! Thank you!

And yeah, I bought too much stuff again. Both the short distance between our school and the mall, and the efficiency of our school’s shuttle services, result in my frequent visits to the mall. But I have improved over time because I learned how to manage my finances and have become more independent as well. Another thing that has been keeping me very excited is that our Thanksgiving break is coming up this Wednesday. One of my classes is canceled on Monday; I only have one class on Tuesday. So I will be heading home on Tuesday afternoon. One of my friends has invited me to go to New York City for the break. I am struggling between the decision of either going home or NYC. Should I go home and relax? Or should I go to NYC and have some fun?

Melody

Fisher Insiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15684441826366439899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576304144258135869.post-51224599115702100572012-11-16T14:23:00.001-05:002012-11-16T14:23:58.617-05:00

Today was a pretty relaxed day. My favorite part about college is the amount of choice you have in what you do, except it can also be a nuisance depending on what you choose. The biggest transition from high school to college is the schedule. In high school your schedule is more or less the same every day and every year. In college it changes drastically. I only have 2 hours of class today so it’s very light. There is so much more free time in college because you choose what you’re doing. From when you wake up until you go to bed is time that you get to fill. Some of it will be class, some of it may be working, some will be studying, or any of the other responsibilities you have, but for the most part it’s all free time that you get to choose. You choose if you want to work 20 hours a week, 5 hours a week, or no hours a week. You choose if you want to take 19 credit hours, 15 credit hours, or 12 credit hours. You get so many options about what is going on in your life than you ever had before. It can be a great experience or a tremendous trap, all depending on how you use it!

If you constantly stress over upcoming exams, then you will understand how I felt this week. I had a chemistry exam on Wednesday and nutrition exam on Thursday. I was anxious since the beginning of this week, even though I understood the material pretty well. I think I did well on both tests and now I am just waiting for the test scores to come out. It always feels great to know that I will not have any exams coming up soon. Also, I just realized that today is Friday, which means I can relax without thinking about tests. So I am planning to go the see the play "Little Shop of Horrors" which is going to be performed by Fisher Players. This play is a rock comedy horror musical about a strange but interesting plant named "Audrey II.” This plant has attracted a lot of customers to the flower shop. However, the owner then found out that Audrey II had an appetite for human blood. This play sounds fascinating to me already and I can’t wait to watch it tonight.
On Saturday, December 1st Fisher is having it's Annual Day Of Celebration which is a multi-ethnic cultural celebration. This is when Fisher celebrates a specific culture and India is the focal culture selected for this year's Day of Celebration. This is a time when students and members of the Rochester community have the opportunity to experience different aspects of the Indian culture, including the food! This is a great event to give an inside look into the Indian culture as well as creating cultural awareness.
